In light of these cordial relations, Sand felt she had to find a tactful way to halt the sale of the “apocryphal” carte de visite. Having settled on a strategy, she wrote on September 18, 1863:

Dear Monsieur, you are selling a photograph of me that’s making everyone scream and that I disavow as firmly as I can. If it wasn’t being sold chez vous, I’d have protested a hundred times. But isn’t the best remedy to make a better one? And for that, what must be done?

Agreeing to the proposed remedy, Nadar invited her to the studio. Six months later she arrived for a preliminary visit to discuss her wardrobe. He promised that they would work on the portrait until it was a complete success. The next morning at eleven o’clock the first session began—and the day after that they started over again: another sixteen poses. All in all, four long visits were needed before the photographer was satisfied, by which time they were all fast friends: Félix and Sand, Sand and Ernestine (who acted as wardrobe assistant), even Sand and Paul, who had just turned eight and was, she declared, a “ravishing” boy.
